How To Store NiMH Battery Waste
To properly store the NiMH battery scrap, in most cases, a Universal Waste label should be affixed to the outside of the package.
NiMH Batteries... Hazardous or Non-Hazardous? Well, it depends...
- NiMH Batteries; Non Hazardous:
Nickel metal batteries are not considered to be a hazardous material if shipped in any manner (e.g. Train, Truck, OTR), EXCEPT if shipped via a vessel (overseas).
- NiMH Batteries; Hazardous (UN 3496):
Nickel metal batteries are considered to be a hazardous material if shipped via a vessel (overseas). Overseas shipments of NiMH batteries are considered Hazardous and must be approved by the shipping country of origin and the receiving country of destination. The movement of Hazardous waste must also be approved by the government of ANY country that the material passes through, in route to the final destination.
How To Ship NiMH Battery CELLS

- Preventing the Touching of Terminals:
Packaging methods should be used to prevent the battery terminals from touching other battery terminals or anything metal.
- Stacked on pallet in layers:
Some rectangle shaped cells can easily be layered on their edges, on a pallet. This technique can have layers as high as 3 high, if done with great care, with cardboard between layers and on top. It is possible to go 4 layers high if a pallet is used on top of the 2nd or 3rd layer; Strapping or wrapping the 3 layers with a skid on bottom, and on top, will allow for two more layers to easily be added on top of the upper pallet.
- Halved Gaylord Boxes:
These boxes can be used for shipping Recycled NiMH batteries. Strong gaylord boxes cut in half and double stacked can be a very effective packaging technique... We add plywood between the layers and a skid on top of the cut to fit piece of plywood.
Buckets can be used for the hybrid sticks standing upright... double stacked.
- Strong Pallets:
Put heavier gaylord boxes or containers on pallets strong enough to handle the carried load. Charges may be applied for spilled batteries and/or damaged boxes and pallets.
Shipping Whole Hybrid Vehicle Battery Packs
GlobalTech has provided the following information, to the best of our abilities, in order to give guidance on how to ship NiMH Hybrid Battery Packs (Cases containing the cells) from your facility to ours in the safest manner possible. We highly advise that lineman's gloves are used during handling; lineman's gloves should be rated up to the capacity of any electrical equipment you handle, we use 1000 volt rated gloves.
- Transport in a manner to Prevent Short Circuits:
The wires of these battery cases contains high voltage, even when the service plug is removed and/or the power switch set to off, this is very important to understand when shipping these batteries to prevent pinch points, short-circuiting, and especially injury.
- Tape Terminals/Exposed Wires:
Tape all exposed, non recessed, terminals and/or exposed wires. Non conductive approved electrical tape must be use when taping exposed terminals and wires.
- Tape Wires:
Tape/zip tie/secure the WIRES, to the battery case, in a manner to prevent pinch points and or short circuits during transportation. Non conductive approved electrical tape must be use when taping exposed terminals and wires.
Place 1st layer of same or similar size model batteries on a pallet.
- Divide Batteries:
Place non conductive material between the batteries to ensure the separation of battery cases.
We suggest vertical stacking no more than 1.5 times the width of the bottom pallet; for exampe, if the pallet is 40" wide the stack can be no higher than 60"; if the pallet is 34" wide, then the stack can be no higher tan 51" high; this is to ensure a lower center of gravity, and limit the ability to tip over. If stacking, each layer must be on its own pallet, or with strong non conductive material dividing layers. Layer separator must prevent Batteries from touching during transport.
Place non conductive material on top of entire layered unit, usually a piece of cardboard satisfies most transportation carriers requirements.
- Strap Layers:
Strap all of the layers together. Do not use metal strapping, use non conductive strapping ONLY. We suggest at least 4 straps... 2 straps perpendicular (90 degrees) from the other 2 straps. Important Note: These straps should prevent all batteries, on all layers, from moving freely.
- Plastic Wrap: Generously Wrap the layered batteries from top to bottom.
