Dry Nicad Battery Recycling: Packaging Them Correctly
Dry NiCD batteries are non hazardous and have no special requirements for packaging or shipping. Globaltech only requires that all exposed terminals are taped or packed in a manner that keeps the terminals from touching. Recessed terminals are considered protected already by design.
Recycling Wet Nickel Cadmium Batteries: The Process
The refineries follow a specific process to remove the usable materials for NiCd batteries. The alkali is removed and neutralized before being safe to be reused: as a method to treat sewage. The battery plates are cut away before being separated. The nickel is processed before being sold as a raw material. The cadmium is sent to a furnace to be processed before also being sold as raw material for new batteries. The resin in the wet NiCd batteries is removed, crushed and sold as recycled resin.

Wet Nicad Battery Disposal: Packaging Them Correctly
GlobalTech Environmental will pick up your Wet Ni-Cd batteries for recycling anywhere in the United States and at any time that's convenient for your business. In order to make the process go more smoothly, we've developed a safe and cost-effective method of packaging them that also happens to be extremely clever.
Start with a gaylord that has both a lid and a bottom. The heavy-duty, six-ply gaylords are preferred for stability if you want to stack them Gaylords that are cut in half are ideal for this process. Make sure the gaylords are flattened out at the point where the flaps of the lid will make contact with them.
Plastic liners are highly recommended by GlobalTech Environmental. This helps contain any acid spills and are required if you're shipping via air. Another way to prevent damage and spillage is to restrict the movement of the Wet NiCd batteries. The best way to do this is to pack them tightly in the gaylord.
If you have more than one gaylord for Wet Nicad battery disposal, you can stack them to save room as long as you've used the six-ply gaylords. Cover the bottom gaylord with a piece of manufactured plywood. We recommend using 1/2-inch plywood for stability and strength. Cover the second gaylord with cardboard before carefully stacking it on top of the bottom gaylord. Don't stack more than two layers high. Strap the gaylords together with strapping the runs vertically over the boxes. The Department of Transportation (DOT) also allows for alternative methods of packaging and transporting Wet NiCd batteries.
Contact GlobalTech Environmental for more information as additional charges could result if the packaging is not adequate.
